One wall. That is all an accent wall asks for, and it is the highest-return change you can make to a living room: a few thousand rupees per square foot less than a full redesign, done in an afternoon, and the thing every guest photographs. Statement murals
For the wall behind the sofa, where people sit facing away from it and guests sit facing it. Big, single scenes; no repeats.
1. Peacock chinoiserie. The most photographed wall we print. Sage ground, hand-drawn peacocks, blossom branches. Pair with cream upholstery and walnut.
2. Seven running horses. A Vastu favourite, drawn as a modern mural in ochre and ink rather than a print of a painting. Best on the wall facing east.
3. Banyan tree. A single tree filling the wall. Needs the longest wall in the room and at least 3 ft of clear floor in front so the trunk is not hidden by furniture.
4. Elephant procession. Miniature-painting inspired, in ochre and indigo. Traditional homes; pair with brass and teak.
Calm and textural
For the TV wall, or for rooms where the furniture is already the statement. Texture reads as expensive without competing.
5. Ink wash marble. Reads as stone from across the room, costs a fraction of it, no grout, no weight, and it hides cables behind a TV unit.
6. Limewash plaster. The texture of the year. Goes with everything; choose a shade one step darker than the other walls.
7. Raw silk. Warm, slightly slubbed, quietly expensive-looking. Champagne behind a grey sofa is the classic pairing.
Nature and light
For north-facing rooms and small flats. A horizon line pulls the eye back and the room reads deeper.
8. Deer in mist forest. Soft greys; the room feels bigger. Set the horizon at seated eye level, about 3.5 ft from the floor.
9. Misty mountain ranges. Layered hills in blue-grey for a room that gets no direct sun.
10. Forest canopy sunlight. Dappled light printed on the wall; put a real plant in front of it and the two merge.
Glamour
For evening rooms, bar corners and homes that entertain.
11. Gold leaf abstract. Brushed gold on charcoal; diyas and lamps in front of it double the light.
12. Heirloom damask. A large-scale damask in tone-on-tone ivory for classic homes; reads as fabric, not as old wallpaper.
Which wall to choose
Stand in the doorway. The wall you see first is the accent wall; if that is the window wall, use the wall behind the main sofa instead. Daylight from a window flattens any pattern on the same wall, and a mural competing with a view loses. In an L-shaped living-dining room, pick one wall per zone at most, and make the dining wall the quieter one.
The TV wall
A television is already a black rectangle demanding attention. Behind it, choose texture (marble, limewash, raw silk, a relief grid) or a soft landscape, never a busy mural, and tell us the TV unit's size so the proof shows the design around it, not behind it. Cables route behind a printed texture invisibly; behind a mural they show.
Lighting an accent wall
- Wall washers or a picture light from above at 2700 to 3000 K make a mural read as painted.
- A floor lamp at one end of a textured wall throws the texture into relief.
- Avoid a cool-white overhead tube; it flattens texture and greys warm colours.
- Metallic finishes need side light; overhead light glares off them.
